The Central Florida MATHCOUNTS Committee will be gearing up for the 2010-2011 competition. This middle school program includes schools from five Central Florida counties and is the largest competition in the state. If interested in serving on the committee, please contact one of the two co-chairs, Leslie Turner, P.E., FES, (turnerla@cdm.com) or Krista Sommerfeldt, P.E., FES (krista.sommerfeldt@aecom.com). Engineer Leslie is also serving as one of the two State Coordinators for the second year.

Since its beginnings nationally in 1983, the MATHCOUNTS program has encouraged thousands of middle school students to pursue mathematically inclined careers such as engineering. Each February over 40 schools, both private and public, from 5 counties come to compete at the Central Florida Chapter MATHCOUNTS competition. It is very rewarding to see how these bright kids excel in math and enjoy the competition.

Last year, 42 Teams and 297 6th, 7th and 8th grade students from Orange , Seminole, Osceola, Lake and Sumter Counties participated. We took five teams and four individuals to the State competition last year. For more information, contact either Leslie Turner, P.E., FES, 407-660-6351, turnerla@cdm.com, or Krista Sommerfeldt, P.E., FES 407-304-4444, krista.sommerfeldt@aecom.com, on our MATHCOUNTS® Committee.

The Central Florida MATHCOUNTS® Competition is scheduled to take place at Olympia High School on Saturday, February 19, 2011.

The 2011 State MATHCOUNTS® Competition is scheduled to take place at the Hilton Orlando Altamonte Springs on Friday, March 25, 2011.

The 2011 Raytheon MATHCOUNTS® National Competition will be held in Washington , DC on May 5-8, 2011.

For more information on being a part of this fun and rewarding committee, please contact either Leslie Turner, P.E., FES, 407-660-6351, turnerla@cdm.com, or Krista Sommerfeldt, P.E., FES 407-304-4444, krista.sommerfeldt@aecom.com, on our MATHCOUNTS® Committee.
